French Bulldog Diet Guide
A balanced diet for a French Bulldog provides the right calories, protein, fat, and micronutrients for the dog’s age and activity level. Here’s how to build one.
Recommended Daily Portion
Adult French Bulldogs: 1–1.5 cups daily of complete kibble, split into 2 meals. Weigh portions; don’t eyeball. Measuring cups vary, and over-portioning is the #1 cause of canine obesity.
Feeding Schedule by Age
- Puppy (2–6 months): 3–4 meals daily
- Puppy (6–12 months): 3 meals daily
- Adult (1–7 years): 2 meals daily, ideally 10–12 hours apart
- Senior (8+): 2 meals daily, may benefit from senior-formula food
Choosing a Quality Food
Look for foods with named animal protein as the first ingredient, the AAFCO ‘complete and balanced’ statement, and clear feeding guidelines. Brands meeting WSAVA nutritional guidelines (Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, Eukanuba) have the strongest research backing.
Special Dietary Considerations for the French Bulldog
Given the breed’s predisposition to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), watch portions carefully and avoid high-fat treats. A weight-management formula may be appropriate after age 6.
Treats
Treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories. Best options: single-ingredient dehydrated meats, carrots, apple slices (no seeds), or training-specific low-cal treats.
Hydration
Fresh water available 24/7. A French Bulldog typically drinks roughly 30–50 ml of water per kg of body weight daily. Sudden changes in drinking can signal kidney issues, diabetes, or hot weather stress.
